The story behind this piece:
This is a 20" x 24" graphite piece based on an 8x10 sketch of mine that I did almost two years ago: [link]
The original sketch was done in what I like to call a visual-stream-of-consciousness manner where I didn't plan any of the elements but instead let the details flow straight from my head onto paper as I went. I was moderately happy with how it turned out at the time, but knew I wanted to do a much larger and more polished version with greater detail. To begin my final version, I retained the overall structure and composition, but filled in the details using the same 'automatic drawing' method in the sketch.
When I started the sketch, I began with the staircase, with no idea what entity would emerge on the left side. In the final piece, I began from the opposite end and finished the staircase last; the cyclical nature of my approach matches the content of the drawing well.
