The spine houses the energy centers (known as chakras) within the body. These are separate from the physical matter of our bodies (which is in essence also energy) and according to some systems of belief comprise that which is attributed as the soul - or all of our being that is not corporeal.
The essence of living beings is divided many different ways according to various beliefs; one is the division of polarities. These two opposites are known in symbolic form often as the spiral (ancient symbol for the sun) and the crescent (moon). These are also called thymos (emotion, or the masculine) and eros (appetite/desire, or the feminine), respectively, within ancient Greek philosophy, and accompany logos (mind) in forming the complete picture of a soul.
The serpent is a symbol of birth & regeneration; and is attributed in some mythologies with giving birth to the universe and/or mankind, and therefore the originator of the soul.
