Update: The bird skull was broken on this, so it has been remade, and can be viewed here:
Materials are sterling silver wire (tarnished after the piece was finished and polished using ultra fine steel wool) and a Zebra Finch skull (recycled) on a velvet ribbon; the pendant alone is approximately 9 cm long.
I just remembered this piece of yours and have to ask, what kind of patina did you use as not to harm the skull? Or did you add the skull to the design later?
I added the skull later.. since any kind of patina is going to potentially harm organic material. I use silver-black (i.e. hydrochloric acid) so I have to be extra careful. For wire that has to be added after the skull, I pre-blacken it before working with it - it just gets a little polished by accident as I work with it.
Thanks, I guess this is true for most materials that are not stones. I suppose using pliers on pre-tarnished wire would be out of the question though, as they would leave scratches.
It is a bit tricky. The one nice thing about silver-black is because it works instantaneously, you don't have to soak the entire piece; you can apply it directly (with a q-tip, say). You just couldn't get too close to the part with the bone.
I actually did that in this piece: [link] if you look closely you can see I left the parts around the ribs on the side their original silver but I applied it directly to the surrounding parts. It created a nice look in the end with the mixed metals.
Ohh, that's very cool. I'll try finding it on eBay or somewhere where they ship to Croatia. It would be great if it also worked on bronze... Yes, this piece of yours looks really nice, it's actually one of my favourite works of yours Thank you!
